Officials said an Arizona woman was killed after being struck by a self-driving Uber vehicle early Monday — an incident believed to be the first of its kind.

The accident in Tempe caused the company to pause all testing of self-driving vehicles in cities across the country.

Tempe Police Sgt. Ronald Elcock told FOX10 Phoenix was woman was walking outside of a crosswalk when she was struck by the self-driving vehicle.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died, according to police.

The self-driving Uber was in autonomous mode at the time of the collison, and there was a vehicle operator behind the wheel at the time, Elcock told FOX10.

Uber said on Twitter they are fully cooperating with local authorities as they investigate, and have paused testing of the self-driving vehicles in cities across the country.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi wrote on Twitter, “Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. We’re thinking of the victim’s family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened.”
