In what appears to be another sign of desperation to increase revenue, Twitter is introducing a new ad program option for businesses. This subscription type system would allow businesses to pay $99 per month to have their Tweets promoted automatically.
Businesses that sign up would continue to Tweet as normal, and Twitter’s system will select Tweets to promote based on their algorithms. This allows businesses to minimize the amount of time and effort they put into their Twitter advertising, while still receiving many of the benefits. The system would include reports that show how effective the ads are.
The page on Twitter’s business site that talks about the new option says, “Instead of creating and optimizing separate Twitter Ads campaigns yourself, this program will do the heavy lifting. You just need to continue using Twitter as you normally do – Tweeting updates, links, and media that you want a larger audience to see. Then, the promotion of your Tweets will be automated.”
The system costs $99 per month and will promote up to the first ten Tweets each day. This would not include replies, quote Tweets, or retweets.
This is an interesting option, and it might actually offer some benefits to certain businesses. Given that you lose a lot of control about which Tweets get promoted and things like that, however, it is hard to say if it is worth it in the end. For just $99 per month, many businesses might want to see how it performs for them.
