YouTube is clearly the biggest player when it comes to online video, but just how big is it? Many people have talked about other platforms such as Netflix and Facebook video starting to become real competitors, but is that the case?
According to an announcement from YouTube this week, viewers are consuming almost as much YouTube content as they are regular TV! According to their information, YouTube streams out more than 1 billion hours of video per day, which is just slightly less than the 1.25 billion hours of TV that viewers consume, according to Nielsen. Interestingly, the amount of traditional TV that people watch is shrinking, while YouTube viewership continues to climb.
Netflix has ‘only’ 116 million hours of video viewed per day, and Facebook video has climbed to 100 million hours per day, which is still far less than YouTube.
As marketers, this should really illustrate just how dominant YouTube is when it comes to video. While it is great to push new content out through Facebook and other platforms, YouTube is definitely the place to put your focus.
