High level executives from Yahoo, including CEO Marissa Mayer, met with other ranking representatives from Twitter to discuss the possibility of a merger last week. While nothing official was said of the meeting, insider sources have confirmed that this is what the meetings were about.
Yahoo has been fairly open about looking for buyers due to the trouble the company is having, and Twitter has been struggling lately as well. The match would be an unusual one, but not entirely unrealistic. Both companies are extremely well known and have a lot of visitors. In addition, the companies don’t really compete with each other so a merger could be beneficial for both.
The CEO of Twitter was not at the meeting, however, so it is unclear just how serious they were taking the possibility.
Later comments from people close to the situation have said that after hours of meetings it does not appear likely that any type of deal will be reached. Many people think that this was more of a formality to put all the cards on the table rather than a real potential deal.
In either case, this type of talk does lend additional credibility to the fact that Twitter is having some serious problems. Whether they end up wanting to merge with another company or they choose to sell out completely, the road ahead for the micro-blogging site seems quite rocky.
