Activists Turn ISIS Twitter Accounts Gay. Is this Good Marketing?

The hacker group Anonymous has hacked the ISIS Twitter account, and turned it very gay friendly. With the icon having a rainbow image that says, “Out & Proud” and much more, this is a somewhat humorous way to fight back against the terrorist organization. ISIS is very anti-gay, and not just in that they don’t approve of the lifestyle. ISIS has been known to kill anyone who is found to be a homosexual, or even those who support it at all.

After the Orlando nightclub shooting that killed 49 people last week, a hacker that calls himself WachulaGhost decided to do what he could to fight back. Since ISIS claimed responsibility for the shooting, and are very anti-gay, what better way than to deface their Twitter account. So he hacked in, changed pictures, put up links to gay porn, and much more.

While this certainly isn’t going to put an end to the terror group, it may be more effective than people realize. This hacker is essentially using a proven marketing technique of making another brand look foolish. In addition to being funny and potentially morale boosting to the LGBT community, it really can be something all enemies of ISIS can laugh about (even those of us who don’t approve of the homosexual lifestyle).

So, while the hacker may not have had all this in mind, they really are running what has the potential to be an effective ‘anti-ISIS marketing campaign.’

The hacker spoke with Newsweek and said, “I did it for the lives lost in Orlando. Daesh [ISIS] have been spreading and praising the attack, so I thought I would defend those that were lost. The taking of innocent lives will not be tolerated.”

This is not the first time that ISIS digital properties have been hacked, and hopefully it won’t be the last.
