Links and Photos Removed from Twitter Character Count

According to a report that came out this week from Bloomberg, Twitter is going to make a very significant change to their service sometime in the next couple weeks.  The change involves the 140-character limit, though it is not what some people might expect.  Despite the rumors that came out some weeks ago about dramatically increasing the limit size, that is not going to happen (at least not any time soon).

The Bloomberg report says that Twitter will stop counting links and photos when calculating the character count.  This is a great move by Twitter because it will allow users to include more data when they are posting links or photos.  Even with link shortening tools, the minimum number of characters that were used in a link was still fairly significant.  When included in a Tweet, the shortest links will still take up 23 characters, which will no longer count.

This update will not only allow users to Tweet ‘longer’ messages without violating the 140-character limit, it will also make it much easier to include links.

Some people were making one Tweet with the link and then immediately follow it with another that had the message.  Other annoying strategies were used to get around the limits, which really makes this move smart for Twitter.
