Several months back Google confirmed that they would be giving websites that are mobile friendly a boost in the search rankings. The move has done a lot to help encourage website owners and marketers to move to more mobile friendly platforms. In what appears to be another step in that direction, Google has just announced that they will be further increasing the effect of the mobile friendly ranking signal in their search results.
Google software engineer, Klemen Kloboves said, “Today we’re announcing that beginning in May, we’ll start rolling out an update to mobile search results that increases the effect of the ranking signal to help our users find even more pages that are relevant and mobile-friendly.”
Sites that are already mobile friendly won’t need to do anything to take advantage of this update. Those that are still lagging behind and running non-friendly mobile themes, however, will see their sites go down in rankings, though certainly not be removed from mobile search results completely. It does seem, however, that this trend will continue until sites are either mobile friendly or completely off the top results of mobile searches.
This update is going to be less impactful than the original one released several months back. To determine if your site is considered mobile friendly or not, use the mobile friendly testing tool found HERE.
