E-Commerce Sales Shoot Up 14.7% YoY for Q4 2015

The Census Bureau has finally released their quarterly report for Q4 2015 and it is all good news for digital marketers.  This is the quarter, of course, which includes all of the holiday shopping, which makes it the most important of the year for most people.

The bureau said that there was an estimated $89.1 billion in e-commerce sales that took place during this quarter.  This is a huge 14.7% increase over the same quarter in 2014.  Online sales accounted for 7.5% of all sales during the quarter in the US, which is up from 6.4% in 2014.  This is a healthy jump in this area and shows that consumers are continuing to become more comfortable with buying online.

In addition to getting a larger total percentage of the shopping dollars, it seems that more total people are buying online.  In addition, people are buying more things and from a more diverse set of retailers.

All of this is great news for brands and digital marketers.

In all of 2015 e-commerce had a total of $341.7 billion in sales, which was a 14.6% increase YoY.  This helps to show that the growth rate wasn’t just for the holiday season but indicates a steady pattern that is likely to continue throughout 2016.
