42% of Marketers Fail Email Marketing 101

GetResponse has recently published a new report titled, “State of Email Marketing by Industry.”  The report surveyed over 1800 marketers and looked at more than 700 million emails.  The intent was to find out what people were doing well and what they were failing at in regards to the essential email marketing efforts.

One of the biggest and more detrimental mistakes that email marketers seem to be making is sending the exact same email to everyone on their list.  According to this report, 42% of markets engage in this practice, which almost certainly has very negative results.

Over the years the top marketers have found that tailoring the wording or content of an email to the specific audience that it is going to can dramatically affect the open rates, click through rates and purchase rates.  Despite the fact that this is very well known throughout the industry, it seems that 42% of marketers are just too lazy make the effort to send highly targeted messages.

On a more positive note, the report found that 75% of marketers are using some type of email automation software, which can help to make the entire process much faster and easier.

When asking marketers about the biggest benefit they enjoy from email marketing, 29% said “generating more leads.”  In second place with 17% each, identifying better quality leads and improving conversion rates tied.

Another interesting point from the report is that 57% of all respondents are planning to grow their email marketing budgets in 2016.  28% are leaving their budgets where they are.
