Opera Mediaworks recently released their latest State of Mobile Advertising report, which contains a lot of important information, especially for marketers who use mobile ads. This report is created from information gathered on the mobile ad network, which serves over 60 billion monthly page impressions to 425 million users, giving it significant credibility.
The study found that Android powered phones are now accounting for as much as 36% of the mobile traffic on their network. This is significantly ahead of the iPhone’s 29%. This is a big jump for Android compared to the previous quarter’s results where iPhone traffic was 31% of the total and Android was at 30.3. Clearly Android has the momentum in this area, growing at a very rapid pace.
Despite the advantage in driving traffic, however, Android isn’t bringing marketers as much money as iOS based traffic. The iPhone drives 40% of the mobile ad revenue, compared with 30% for all the Android based smartphones. When you factor in tablet traffic as well, the picture is even better for Apple. iPhone and iPad traffic combined account for 38 percent 43 per cent of traffic and 56 percent of revenue total. Android devices (phones and tablets) have 38 percent of traffic and just 32 percent of revenue.
In the report, Opera said, “We expect to see Android’s share of revenue to continue to grow, but given how far ahead Apple is in the tablet space, we do not expect Android to take the lead for cross-platform monetization in 2014.”
Blackberry and Windows devices also had slight gains this quarter, but are so far behind the dominant Apple and Google backed platforms that they aren’t really in the same category.
