Twitter is over seven years old now, and has quickly become one of the most powerful marketing tools available on the Internet. An info graphic was recently released from DashBurst illustrating some of the different statistics concerning the social media giant. The information gathered together provides excellent information to marketers who are looking to improve the way they are using Twitter to build their brand.
Highlights
Some of the most significant statistics for marketers from the info graphic are listed below:
- Over 170 Billion Tweets have been Posted
- Tweets containing image links average twice the engagement rates as those without
- 200 Million monthly active twitter users
- 80% of twitter users access their account via mobile
- The average twitter user has 208 followers
- Engagement drops off sharply with more than 4 tweets per day
This information should help marketers to adjust their twitter strategies. One of the most interesting pieces of information here is that engagement rates drop off sharply after 4 tweets per day. The info graphic actually shows that the average engagement rate is about 120% (above average) for the first tweet of the day, then drops to 60% of the average rate for the second tweet. The third and fourth are at about 40-50%, and then it drops off drastically from there. Of course, there are other factors which will influence this statistic, but it does seem to show that tweeting more often, isn’t a good idea.
With 80% of twitter users accessing their account via mobile, it seems clear that any links back to a marketing page really need to be optimized for mobile devices. Sites which don’t have either a dedicated mobile version of their page, or at least a page which renders well on smart phones will undoubtedly lose a lot of the interaction they would otherwise get, and may even drop followers who will feel that they can’t benefit from the tweets anyway.
