Spindle, a tool which has been growing in popularity over the past couple years by providing real time information about things going on near the individual searching. They gathered information from Facebook, Twitter and other social networks to help people learn about all sorts of local events ranging from sporting events to business openings and much more. On the official Spindle blog it was announced that Twitter has purchased the company for an undisclosed amount. The Spindle team is now relocating to San Francisco to begin the next phrase of this great tool.
Twitter has long been one of the best places to go for real-time information supplied by users around the world, but this new acquisition will help them also serve the local markets as well. With the powerful Spindle discovery engine Twitter will be able to quickly provide people with a wide range of information about places to go and things to do nearby. This is also going to be attractive to marketers who can get their local goods and services in front of millions of new users quite quickly.
Since Spindle doesn’t draw its information from the web, but only from social networks it is yet another indication that companies that don’t have a presence on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks are losing out on huge opportunities. With this new team of Twitter and Spindle companies will be able to directly market to local users who are ready to make purchases.
There has been no word on exactly how Spindle will be combined with Twitter in any direct way yet. They may continue to function separately for quite some time, or Twitter might push to have local information put into user’s Twitter feeds right away. It seems like it will be an excellent fit for both Twitter and Spindle, and the users should see some great benefits for both services.
